After staying in beta for last several months, ZoneAlarm, one of the most popular free firewall for Windows, quietly released the first stable version of the product to be used with Windows 7. In fact, the release was so quiet that the publishers have still not updated their download page. The download being offered at the time of this writing is still the earlier version 8 of the firewall.
Those who were using ZoneAlarm in their Vista and XP machines and upgraded to Windows 7 and soon discovered to their disappointment that ZoneAlarm no longer worked, had to use another firewall in it’s place. Now these people can go back to their old favorite. Of course, some of us like me grew fond of the new firewall they were using. PC Tools Firewall in my case. I’m not sure whether I will replace PC Tools Firewall, which is performing so good for me, with the new ZoneAlarm 9. This is why it’s so important to get your products out as soon as possible.
Anyway, the new version 9, apart from being Windows 7 compatible, has the following new features:
New Browser Security toolbar:
- Spy site detection
- Signature and heuristic phishing detection
- Website safety check and rating
