My Movie Library: The Best Movie Collection Organizer

Several times I considered making a catalogue of movies I own, but each time I was put off by unintuitive software that makes me do all the work. Creating and maintaining a catalogue is a laborious task. The kind of movie organizers I have come across require me to enter each movie name manually which is such a waste of time and effort. But thanks to My Movie Library, now I own a neat library of movies that is easy to browse, search and play.

This semi-automated movie library manager is different from the rest – it does all the heavy lifting for you, which is exactly what I needed. Simply allow the software to scan your movie folder or hard drive and My Movie Library will detect all movies inside it. From the movie title My Movie Library will retrieve relevant information about the movie such as year of release, cast, director, album cover, rating, and the plot summary.

My Movie Library is able to parse any folder for video files recursively, meaning that it will detect files not only inside the given folder but also within sub-folders. So all you need to do is point the program to the highest folder in the hierarchy.

Once all video files are detected and listed, My Movie Library will attempt to search on IMDB for movie information upon user approval. The success of this process will depend on how intuitive the filenames are. The odds of correctly identifying the movie and subsequently retrieving data from the Internet will be higher if the filename is, say for example, Children_of_men.avi rather than childrenofmenDVDriptorrent.avi. A file named movie_37.avi will not work at all.

If the filenames does not reflect the title of the movie in a way the program can read, you have to correct it by keying in the actual movie title in the “refined name” column. This doesn’t change the filenames. The program just uses the “refined name” as the keyword when it searches on IMDB.

Depending on the size of your collection, it can take a while for the information to download. When this is completed, you will have a neat library of movies that can be sorted by movie name, IMDB rating, release year, genre or by director. You can also search for a movie using any of these parameters.

Clicking on a movie displays a brief information about the movie along with the movie poster/album cover and the movie plot in brief. You can edit the listing manually if you wish to. Double clicking on a movie name launches the movie in your default media player.
