Stream Movies and TV Shows from Megaupload With MU Player

MU Player is an open source program to search and play video files hosted on Megaupload.com without completely downloading them. MU Player itself doesn’t play these videos, you have to choose a third party video player such as VLC Media Player or GOM Player. The program just downloads the video stream and feeds it to the chosen video player for playback. The video file is simultaneously saved to the hard disk in the application directory of MU Player, so you can also use this program to download videos to watch later.

MU Player makes searching for movies and TV shows super easy. There are not many good Megaupload search engines available. The ones that are, are either clogged with spam or simply not good enough. With MU Player, you just type the title of the movie or TV show in the search box, and get results immediately. There are no false links, spam or spurious results.

When you click on one of the results, MU Player will fetch the plot of the movie or TV show from themoviedb and thetvdb along with a small poster image, and of course, the source of the video file. There can be multiple sources for the same video and video quality and size can differ from source to source. To play the video, just double click on one of the sources.

If you have the direct Megaupload link to the video file, you can paste the URL into the URL box and click on the Play URL button to start playing. Only video files will play. Videos inside archives cannot be streamed.

After a mandatory wait time of 25 second, which is actually a reduced one from the default 45 seconds imposed by Megaupload, the video file will start buffering. Once a couple of megabytes has been downloaded the video will start playing on your chosen or default video player. The developer recommends using VLC Media Player or GOM Player. But I’m pretty confident that MPlayer and variants of MPlayer such as KMPlayer or SMPlayer will work too.

Note: If VLC says the AVI file is broken and needs to be repaired, chose ‘Ignore’.

Before a video starts streaming, MU Player will offer you to download subtitles. You can select the subtitle source and language from the dialog box. Downloaded subtitles are also saved to in the application directory of MU Player.

MU Player is a great alternative for streaming movies in places where BitTorrent is blocked, or streaming services not available.

Installation OK, but program does not open in Win XP - sp3 (even with Net 3.5).

Got something to say?
