How to Video Chat in Facebook

Facebook has just announced video calling and group chat, along with other improvements, that allows you to talk to your friends face to face. All you need to do is complete a quick, one-time setup that involves installation of an app, and you’re ready to call any friend on Facebook.

To enable video chat, visit this page and click Get Started.

Once you’ve clicked the button, the chat window will open in the right showing you a list of your friends that are available at the moment. Facebook will ask you to select a person you want to call or video chat. Once you’ve made your selection, Facebook will ask you to download the Facebook video call plugin.

After you’ve got the plugin installed, you can request video chat with any available friend by clicking on the person’s name in the chat window and then clicking on the video camera icon. Your friend will need to install the Video Calling plugin as well, and follow through the same steps you did, before the call can get through.

It is not necessary for both sides to have a webcam to initiate a video chat. If one party doesn’t have a webcam or microphone, the other party will just not be able to see or hear them. If your friend isn’t available, you can always leave a video message.

The time and date of each call you make will be listed in your ongoing message history with each friend. The calls themselves are not recorded or saved.
