How to Create Windows 8 Bootable USB Drive

The Windows 8 Developer Preview which Microsoft revealed at the BUILD conference yesterday is an ISO file, of course, just like any other operating system available for download. If you are preparing to write the ISO image file on to a blank DVD, wait! You don’t have to waste that disk. You can boot it straight from a USB Flash drive. This is how to do it.

The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool from Microsoft lets you create a bootable USB flash drive from Windows 8 ISO file. Yes, that program was created for Windows 7 but since Windows 8 is based on Windows 7, this works for the latest operating system too.

To run this program, you will need Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 installed on your machine. If you already have it, then go ahead. Make sure you have a USB flash drive with at least 4GB of space.

Start Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. In the SOURCE FILE box, type the name and path of your Windows 8 ISO file, or click BROWSE and select the file from the OPEN dialog box.

Next select the USB DEVICE the drop-down list to create a copy on a USB flash drive.

Click BEGIN COPYING. When finished, you will have a bootable USB drive ready to install Windows 8 from.
