Bitdefender Safego is a free tool designed to scan links posted on a user’s social network accounts and detect spam, scams and other e-threats, while also keeping users aware of personal information exposure. Bitdefender Safego was initially launched for Facebook. Now the security company has released an application for the micro-blogging network Twitter.
BitDefender Safego for Twitter works exactly like Bitdefender Safego for Facebook. Users first authorize the application to access their Twitter accounts, after which BitDefender Safego gets into work by scanning content posted on the users’ stream. The service checks unknown users before you follow them, checks the accounts of people you’re following and scans direct messages for spam, suspicious links and high jacking attempts. Threats are ranked by their severity as red, yellow, grey or green. There is also an option where you can warn your friends if it finds their accounts have been compromised.
BitDefender Safego uses BitDefender antimalware and antiphishing engines to scan URLs in the cloud, based on a blacklist of untrusted web sites and on heuristic detection. Since BitDefender Safego is a Twitter application rather than a browser plug-in, protection is always with you no matter which browser or computer you use to access Twitter from.
